HOUSE OF THEODORA CHATS TO ARTIST ANNA DART

If there were ever an artist truly in love with love, it would be Anna Dart. The language she uses to describe her art and the world around her is as beautiful, sultry and emotive as her work – “I am in love with the moment I am in. My colours are my notes. My brush is my violin. The paper is the skin. For me painting is like making love.”

Read our interview with Anna below where she shares her inspirations, her lust for life and her fascination with the colour grey.

Who is Anna Dart and how does she become involved in the erotic art?

Hola everyone! So pleased to answer your questions! I am Anna, currently based in between Barcelona, London and Zürich.

In daily life you could see me wandering somewhere at the Tate or hugging Gaudi's chimneys, going to school expanding the list of foreign languages I master (now I am embracing Norwegian), with colours over my fingers and with wonder over my eyes, undertaking Stanislavski training or Limona dance technique clases. You would find me directing exciting multi sensorial art events where the dancers, poets, filmmakers and musicians improvise over the paintings, cross-pollinating the disciplines. I like to eat carrots on my way, I almost always have them on me (giggles).

I have a constant craving for the light, for finding it in others and within me. Also I am a sort of time traveller. By making my provocative watercolours suddenly appear in the unusual places around the world: next to Van Gogh's Sunflowers, over the trunks of the old Swiss trees, at the glass of the stylish bloody red Mercedes-Benz 500K of 1936, at the doors of a grand hotel in Monaco or by spreading hundreds of my paintings with sensual rose petals over the ancient stage of the great Roman amphitheater of Lyon, I like to think that I shake a little bit the timelines and rush into the impossible (you can see all this on my Insta stories).

When everything started? In 2012. When I built my first portfolio with grey portraits and discreet mesmering lovers’ scenes and right away had three shows in the city of Barcelona and was invited to Köln Art Fair, then to Rochester, New York, then my art got to Alaska as if it became the character of "Into the wild" film.  Now I have a big range of different art techniques I use in my art practice and I became more outrageous in terms of subjects (sorry, dad). I find myself very much interested in raw abstract expression.

My latest series of paintings is figurative though and called "Change the climate only in your bedroom". I create exaggeratedly intense and vivid images of the human emotional and physical connection with the firm intention to empower people and bring attention to the essential topics of ecology, self discovery and development. I once said to a friend "If you take care of the planet, I will feel that you take care of me". It goes the opposite way too, if one's emotional and physical vessel is healthy, it brings good to the Earth.

I use the funds I raise from my art to plant trees in Kenya in the little forest of mine or as I call it - my Garden of Eden. Those who get my paintings have a lovely tree planted with their name and they can monitor its growth. Also I support the local eco-commerce and sustainable fashion and back up the important to me HSP's research (high sensory processing sensitivity).

Every morning I wake up and dedicate my life to awakening in people the connection to the emotions. I deeply believe that the attention brings things to life.

One of the newest shows I made was during Zürich Art Weekend 2020 in some private gorgeous art space with an invited musician of Bolshoj Theater, Alexander Boldachev and a talented dancer Aceko. As soon as the visitors opened the mysterious door, they travelled from one room to another discovering the sensual art over the ceiling, the walls, opening cupboards, the fridge and windows, laying under the piano, followed by music and movement and guided by little messages popping here and there over the furnitures, the plants leaves, diverse objects inviting the spectators for a play, self introspective and daydreaming.

The funniest messages were for example "Turn me on" over the light switcher, "Do you want to know" at the door handle or "Eye contact" at the mirror. I was beyond excited seeing so many shinning eyes that night. I even celebrated it with a glass of... deep grey watercolour (giggles).

My intention is to do more of this, for example at the weddings: some elegant breathtaking professionally crafted art together with the poetic titles always guarantee a big impact!

What inspires you?

We deserve to be loved, to be really listened and be cared about the little things we said in the conversations. We deserve to be with someone who thinks highly of us and finds us brilliant. Who tenderly invites us to get out of the comfort zone and gets excited about our little steps of growth. We deserve the person who stays loyal when you are sinking in the most deep and dark place of sorrow and waits patiently for us as a glittering light. We deserve to be with someone who grows kindness as flowers in the garden of thought about oneself and towards us. We deserve that person who kisses our cheek in public and gets excited when we explode into confettis because the trees and the sea leave us enchanted. We deserve to be surrounded by someone who can call us in the middle of the night without feeling uncomfortable and drives the whole way through the countries to bring us a croissant and a bunch of our favourite flowers and see us if only for an hour. We deserve that person who thinks we are the most beautiful beings on earth when we get sick and don't want to watch ourselves in the mirror. We deserve to be by the side of someone who respects the lack of our sexual experience and delicately guides us hugging us the whole night if we are scared or shy. We deserve to be with the one who commits to us when there are billions of people out there available on multiple apps. The person who touching our hands gets electrified and only have eyes for us in the room. The person who wants us free and wants us love ourselves more than anyone.  That person who lets us go in peace if the life brings us with someone else...

The dating scene has radically changed over the last years and even the months. It looks as easy as never to access to people but it is hell not. I want to bring light to this and make people know that they are not alone in this.

I see myself as a bridge builder to others and my inner-self since I face the same puzzles in a daily life as anyone. My intuition and experience say my art brings luck and nurtures empathy.

Your mantra is “paintings with frames, life without them”.  What does this mean?

Have you seen the film by Woody Allen “A Rainy day in New York”? The real adventure starts when one goes out into a journey, when one faces the unknown, dives into the unexpected which is a scary place to be. I want my art to be an exciting invitation for a change, an invitation for questioning yourself, if you are ready to grow and sometimes be uncomfortable, if you can live your days as a movie, if you can make out of your day a masterpiece.

What is your artistic process?

I am doing a lot of cultural nomading. Being an ICOM member (the international organisation of museum professionals) I would visit and be involved in multiple museum projects, I would go to opera, dance and drama festivals and keep track of the things that I am amazed by. I would follow many photographers and painters and meet people from different backgrounds and make friends with those living in the streets, scientists working at CERN, spiritual guides, well known actors and musicians, PhD students etc. All that is my personal research on the human hearts and beauty. That is the most important part of my artistic process, which mostly happens away from my studio. Then what I paint is the daily work I am committed to, but it is a tiny little piece of my practice as a multidisciplinary artist.

What are your favourite colours to work with?

Definitely grey. One dear friend said: “The grey is a place where everything is possible”. For me it is quiet and simple, yet powerful. Once you turn volume on listening, the delicate stuff becomes huge. It is the most empathetic color that I know, the color of patience, anresting honesty, non-judgement and of forever-worthiness. I did a fascinating project about Grey back in 2016. I questioned people from all over the world about it, friends, strangers, in the streets and train stations. What does the grey colour evoke in you? I portrayed the results in the Choreoscope Dance and Film Festival partnering with some performing artists. My research is to be continued. Actually, I am eagerly inviting those who are reading me and view me on Instagram to share your thoughts on the grey colour because the book on the subject will be published within a year or so.

What is eroticism for you?

Intelligence and lust.

What is beauty?

Empathy. Precision. Fluidity. Knowledge and action. Silence. Rain. Infinite stars and mysteries of Cosmos. Coincidences. Gaudi´s ceilings. Lacrimosa by Mozart. Little Prince by Exupery. Vigeland Mausoleum. Michelangelo´s Sistine Chapel. Grand Finale by Hofesh Shechter. Kaash by Akram Khan. The first sun rise the eyes see in the morning. Kind inner dialogue. The smell of fresh farmers bread and coffee. A house filled with plants, books and joy. Golden curly hair and dimples. When someone whispers your name and kisses your neck.

You paint people in sexual ecstasy. What does that look like?

Going quantum.

What thoughts run through your mind the moment before you announce a new work to the world?

What my mom will think about that (giggles)

What is your biggest triumph as an artist in the erotic space?

That my mom gives me a Like (giggles again). Apart from jokes, people used to say to me “Hey your art and personality helped me to pursue my dream. Or helped to become more vulnerable, truthful to myself, or encouraged me to take a risk”. They’ve even said “Your art in my culture is a crime, but I love this crime”.  I want my art to be new, different and boundless. And my voice to bring change, in my closest community and on a bigger scale.

If we were lucky to see you in the your artistic bliss, creating your works, what would we see? Can you paint a picture for us?

Early mornings or very late nights. Diffusing light. Silent outside.  Some smooth music on. Probably a glass of a good French wine and a dark chocolate on the table. Palo Santo burned in the air. I would put on black shoes with heels and red rose on my lips. I am getting prepared for something sacred, as if it was a ceremony, a ritual. I am in love with the moment I am in. My colours are my notes. My brush is my violin. The paper is the skin. For me painting is like making love.

What do you hope to see changed in the next five years for the artists?

More dancing painters and painting dancers.

Who are 5 women that inspire you?

In cinema: Isabel Coixet and Jane Champion; in dancing Pina Bausch; in literature Anais Nin and Sylvia Plath; in acting Mélanie Laurent; in blogging: Elle May Watson. These are 7 already, and I can keep on saying :)
