My gauntlets

My partner and I spent a good many nights last year binging on The Great.  If you have no idea what I’m on about, The Great is a hilarious, filthy, anti-historical comedy series about Catherine the Great’s attempts to modernise Russia during Peter III’s rule.

It stars Elle Fanning as Catherine and Nicholas Hoult as Peter. Those familiar with early 2000 comedies may remember Nicholas as the adorable boy with the hippy mother from About a Boy. In The Great, he is an absolute imbecile, at one point having sex with Catherine’s mother before accidentally pushing her out of a window to her death.

Anyway, the show is hilarious with its constant shouting of “Huzzah”, most notably to show Peter’s idiocy, and its pithy lines, like this one from Catherine to Peter: "Thank You, Husband. You Were Right After All, With Your Impeccable Fudgement, Good Socks, And Massive Clock. Is That It?"

As with many of these period shows, I love the costumes. A long-standing fascination with corsetry and beautiful intricate design means I spent a lot of my time simply staring at the cloth. Is it of little surprise then that this collection reveal is for my gauntlets?

Now, when I say gauntlet you probably think of more Game of Thrones style –– a hard, threatening glove made from leather or metal. Most suited for combat, not sauntering into court.

Well, my gauntlets are definitely for the latter. Made by the revered Paul Seville (the man who also created my horsehair whip), these gauntlets are sensational. The gauntlets are made from ivory leather that is laser cut with a lace pattern and has a bronze metallic backing. Each gauntlet is cut and sculpted to fit over the forest, wrist and hand. They can be worn as a restraint with an adjustable corsetry lacing closure.
